Board of Inland Revenue
- A small number of higher civil servants responsible to the Treasury for the administration and collection of the principal direct taxes in the UK, but not the indirect VAT and excise duties. They are responsible for income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax, inheritance tax, petroleum revenue tax, and stamp duties. The agency responsible for collecting National Insurance contributions became an executive office of the Inland Revenue in April 1999. Under the Taxes Management Act (1970), they are under a duty to appoint inspectors and collectors of taxes who, in turn, act under the direction of the board. They also advise on new legislation and prepare statistical information. In September 2004 the Board of Inland Revenue and the Board of Customs and Excise merged to form HM Revenue and Customs.
